Why are colloidal particles in wastewater difficult to naturally settle?
There are many suspended impurities in wastewater, including large particles with a specific gravity greater than 1 and suspended solids that are prone to settling. These can be removed by natural settling or centrifugation methods. However, for small suspended particles with a specific gravity less than 1, such as colloidal particles, their size ranges from 10-4 to 10-6mm, which are very stable and have extremely slow settling speeds. These colloidal particles carry a negative charge, and due to the principle of repulsion of the same sex, they cannot adhere to each other and settle. At the same time, the surface of colloidal particles is also covered with a hydration layer, which further hinders the contact and adhesion between particles. Therefore, these tiny colloidal particles are difficult to naturally settle in wastewater.
