During the biochemical treatment process, microorganisms in activated sludge continuously consume organic matter from wastewater. Some of these organic substances are oxidized into energy for microorganisms to use, while others are used by microorganisms to synthesize new cytoplasm for reproduction. However, with the metabolism of microorganisms, some old microorganisms will die, resulting in what is known as residual sludge.
